Are you under 16 and looking for a great new sport that will not only keep you fit but also allow you to meet lots of new friends? Then the popular game of cricket in the UK might be just for you.
You may not have heard of it before, but it’s been around since the 1960s. Yes – all the time. It was first played in Mexico at the time. Its popularity later spread to Spain and South America. Recently, it’s spread throughout Europe, and in the UK, it’s really popular.
It is a combination of tennis and squash, with a scoring system similar to tennis, and the ball has to go over the net. Squash is similar in that there are walls that the ball hits before reaching the opponent’s side.

There is an additional £1 discount for siblings or those taking multiple courses.
Junior cricket is currently played on Saturdays (9am-10am) for mixed age groups and Thursday (5pm-6pm) for junior cricket (11+).
Southend Leisure & Tennis Complex has three covered courts and an open-air panoramic exhibition court, providing you with a variety of playing options.
Benefits of playing cricket for teenagers
Padel is a great way to keep fit. Not only is it fun and social, but it’s also a great cardiovascular workout. It works every muscle in the body and also helps improve motor skills like hand-eye coordination.
Cardiovascular activity keeps blood flowing throughout the body, which helps strengthen the immune system. And then there are the mental health benefits as well. Yes, you’ll get that endorphin rush during the game, and afterwards, you’ll feel relaxed, have a better sense of well-being, and no doubt sleep better that night.
@MDPIOpenAccess: “Scientific research shows that regular cricket practice appears to improve physical fitness and promote health in both adults and children.”
The best part is that it can be played by any age. Some players are only four years old, while others who hit the ball are in their nineties.
Padel – a family activity in Southend
Of course, it’s not just youngsters who can benefit from cricket. Exercise like this is good for everyone. This means the whole family can play together. In fact, it’s a great way to kill some time during the upcoming spring school holidays. This is especially true if you live in or near Southend, where Galleon Park is located.
