Argentine player Delfina Brea discusses her great moments with partner Bea Gonzalez in an exclusive interview with Padel Alto in Rome.
– We knew that if we played well and we kept in touch, we could be the second pair,” Delphi told Padel Alto.
After her debut at the Premier Padel Major in Rome, Delfina Brea reflected on their current situation with Bea González in an exclusive conversation with padel Alto.
The two decided to join forces at the beginning of April, and they have continued to improve both in the game and in performance, and have shown great stability on the court.
– We came together with the expectation of a strong partnership. Joining forces in the middle of the season is not easy; you actually adapt as the game goes on and I’m sure we’ll get better and better.
“Had fun with Bea”
After only three months of cooperation, the two have already achieved excellent results. Biya and Delphi were crowned champions at the Dinamarca Open and Valladolid Masters, and reached the finals in Vienna and Toulouse.
Did you expect to achieve such results so quickly?
– No, while people will always switch partners for better results, it’s obvious, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a liar. When we decided to collaborate, it was to set higher goals, and that’s exactly what we did.Had a lot of fun with Bea; we got along really well and things flowed between us
The two have known each other for years since first collaborating in 2019. The friendship between the Spaniard and the Argentine united them and their good relationship on the pitch mirrored their rapport off it.
– We know each other very well; it’s been a long time. With just one look, we know what the other person is thinking, so the communication between us is much easier.
“We could be the second pair.”
Sanchez/José Maria and Salazar/Trey have dominated the women’s arena in recent years, ranking first and second respectively, far ahead of other combinations.
The absence of Alejandra Salazar recovering from right arm surgery opened the window for Brea and Gonzalez to battle for the world number two.
Do you think Alejandra Salazar’s absence offers an opportunity that wasn’t there before?
– We believe so. Our number one goal is to play well; we know that if we play well and we keep in touch, we can be a second pair. It’s very difficult to get to No. 1 these days; Paula and Alli are playing at a very high level and we both feel like we need to be more prepared for it. But for the second place position, I think we are ready and we will do everything we can to finish the year there.
First appearance on the Premier Padel circuit
The women’s competition has made its debut on the top padel circuit and is held at the more iconic venue of Rome’s Foro Itálico. For Delfina, playing in this environment is really special.
– This place is amazing; few things can compare to the competition here. We enjoy it to the fullest with joy and enthusiasm.
Brea and Gonzalez have already featured at the Italian Major, and despite less-than-favorable weather conditions during the event, both won both races to secure places in the quarter-finals.
– The court challenged; it was hot and the dots were getting longer. You’ll need a lot of patience and mental preparation before a match, as these conditions level the playing field for all pairings. This will be a game full of surprises.
meeting with pope francis
Rome brings fond memories to Delfina, and just two months ago the Argentine had the opportunity to visit the Vatican and meet Pope Francis.
The Argentine player met the Pope as part of a charity event, where she was given a specially designed racket signed by him, which was later auctioned off for the charity.
For Delfina, this experience will stay with her throughout her life.
– The Pope baptized me as a baby because I lived near the church where he worked, so in that sense it was pretty magical. These places and people evoke a lot of emotion. He’s a very down to earth guy, humble and simple…just talking about it gives me goosebumps because it was a super magical moment. He means a lot to my family so it’s very exciting.
